I see this Shelby Charger GLH-S parked around the corner from me all the time. I think someone who works at the Mercedes dealership there owns it, which is kind of awesome. Apparently, Shelby took the last 1,000 Shelby Chargers in ‘87 and super modified them in nearby Whittier with the same gear they stuck on the epic Omni GLH-S. According to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , that paint had no clearcoat, and this one’s paint is getting thin which gives it a nice broken in look. I was never nuts about this design. Lots of overhang and that thick c-pillar are kind of awkward. Still, I bet it’s fun for a mid-80’s Chrysler product. I love this, “There was also an allowance made for the 85 mph (140 km/h) speedometer in the form of a sticker which extended the range of the speedometer to an indicated 125 mph (200 km/h).”

You’ll never believe what I saw the other day Jonee.

Oh yeah. We need to get these two together.

How hard could it be? We are only in different countries and something like 5000 miles apart. I’m in ontario on top of Ogdensburg NY.

They can meet in St. Louis, or something. That’s God’s country up there. Near Ottawa?

Yup. Perhaps right in Ottawa. :D

Totally agree. But awkward and awesome both start with ‘aw’ so it’s all good. That part about no clear-coat is actually true?

It’s awesomely awkward. I’d love to drive one. Those old turbocharged Chryslers are really amusing. Incredible turbo lag. I don’t know what the logic was behind no clear-coat, but that’s what I read. That was around the time when clear-coat was just becoming standard. Maybe Shelby thought it was too heavy.

Not sure if I told you before but my dad owned a white Chrysler ES Turbo for a while, I think you know it as a Dodge Shadow. That turbo really kicked in!
One thing I do know I told you was what image most of the US-car drivers over here had: a bit criminal. Dad was an alderman back then ;-)

That’s funny. The Dodge Shadow was a really nerdy car, so I can see an alderman driving one. But, with that turbo it was a bit of a sleeper. I bet he enjoyed it while it was working.

A sleeper is a complete understatement. He’d drive of from a traffic light like an animal leaving everything in dust. It accelerated pretty impressive. It used a lot of fuel though. And it had a big wing.

They did a Shelby version of that car, too. It had a wing, but pretty subdued. I’m curious about the big one on your dad’s. Sounds pretty awesome.

Again: Pre-digital photography era. But I suppose it was this one, but white. Wing seems not to be as big as in my memories. And back then the normal EU-saloon had not any wing at all so it got noticed ;-)

Yeah, that’s the same wing we got. A future classic (not really). They’re not that hard to find here still which surprises me. You’d figure they’d all have been driven into the ground or fallen apart by now. A really cheap way to get some performance.

These have vanished of the streets over here, can’t remember when the last time was I saw one... Too bad dad had it just before I got my driver’s license!
